Do I have the
right to talk to an attorney?
The
U.S. Constitution's
Sixth Amendment guarantees that in all
criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to have
the assistance of counsel for his defense.
If you are suspected or accused of a crime you have the right to
consult an attorney. If you
are arrested, the police must inform you of
your right to consult an attorney before questioning you.
You have the right to have an attorney represent you throughout
the criminal process.
If you cannot afford one, an attorney will be appointed to
represent you. Although not recommended, you can also
elect to
represent yourself in court.
