Fraud is generally considered a
crime
against property. Laws vary by state, but a person is
typically guilty of fraud if he or she
with intent to
deceive or injure anyone:

destroys, removes, or conceals any deed, mortgage,
security instrument, or other writing for which the law

fraudulent insurance claims to defraud insurer. |

Makes fraudulent markings
or brandings or fraudulently changing marks on animal. |

Makes
false entries and statements by investment companies
offering stock or security for sale. |

Obtains a
mortgage, mortgage note, promissory note, etc., by false
representation. |

Misrepresents association
with, or academic standing at, postsecondary educational
institution and/or makes false claims of academic degree
or title. |
Penalties vary by state and range from a
misdemeanor to a
felony
depending on the specific nature of the false statements or
misrepresentations and state laws.
