Endangering the welfare of a child

Endangering the welfare of a child is generally classified as a crime involving danger to a person.  A parent, guardian, or other person supervising the welfare of a child commits this offense if he or she knowingly endangers the welfare of the child by violating a duty of care, protection or support, or the failure or omission to provide a child with the care, supervision, and services necessary to maintain the child's physical and mental health, including, but not limited to, food, nutrition, clothing, shelter, supervision, medicine, and medical services that a prudent person would consider essential for the well-being of the child.  Penalties vary by state and range from a misdemeanor to a  felony.  See also child abuse.
